How can companies make an impact on World Cancer Day 2018?

Employers and individuals across the country are gearing up to make their presence felt on World Cancer Day on February 4th, 2018.

Here, we have pulled together facts about cancer and tips for employers to boost their involvement this year.

The facts around cancer

Figures published by the American Cancer Society show that across the U.S. more than 600,000 people will have passed away as a result of cancer this year. At the same time, an estimated 1.6 million new cancer diagnoses will have taken place in the last 12 months.

Of this figure, breast cancer remains one of the most common diagnoses, with approximately 250,000 new cases and 40,000 deaths in 2017 alone. Worldwide, more than 8.8 million people will have died from cancer this year - that's more than HIV/AIDS, malaria and tuberculosis combined. Finding effective treatments to reduce the burden of cancer on the lives of millions of people across the globe therefore remains one of the greatest challenges facing medicine today.

Getting Hired is proud to have Susan G Komen Maryland as a community partner and we reached out to hear from them about their fight against cancer.

“Each one of us knows someone who has been touched by breast cancer. Though progress and early detection have improved survival rates, we still have a lot of work to do especially with metastatic breast cancer and making sure everyone has access to care. We encourage corporations to get involved in the fight against breast cancer through sponsorship, fundraising programs, or volunteering,” said Michael Jessup, Executive Director of Komen Maryland.

How can employers get involved?

A wide array of options are open to all employers to get involved with World Cancer Day, from hosting local events and fundraisers to keeping active on social media - via the hashtags #WeCanICan and #WorldCancerDay - and tweeting their support.

Driving greater awareness of your support for this cause can be a fine attractor for your business too. Companies can follow in the footsteps of organizations including Amgen and Bristol-Myers Squibb, both of which have pledged to promote a global commitment to national policy change ensuring the fight against cancer is placed at the forefront of government thinking.

Organizations that have an inspirational tale to tell around their efforts to support World Cancer Day, and cancer awareness in general, can also get involved by sharing their story.
